What's New (February 7, 2010)
Boomer Music and the Super Bowl
Ever since Janet Jackson’s infamous “Wardrobe Malfunction” during the 2004 Super Bowl half time show in Houston, aging, venerable rock and rollers have taken over the stage during the grand finale of football. What! You say! How can that be? Sure – just follow through with me for a minute. Let me see now… 2005 - ALLTEL Stadium, Jacksonville, Paul McCartney (born June, 18 1942) – Check! 2006 - Ford Field, Detroit, The Rolling Stones (Mick Jagger born July, 26 1943) – Check! 2007 - Dolphin Stadium, Miami, Prince (born June 7, 1958) – Check! 2008 - University of Phoenix Stadium, Tom Petty (born October 20, 1950) & the Heartbreakers – Check! 2009 - Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Bruce Springsteen (born September 23, 1949) and the E Street Band – Check! 2010 - Sun Life Stadium, Miami Gardens, The Who (Roger Daltrey born March1, 1944) – Check! Prince was the youngest when he took the stage at age 48! Yup, these artists are all boomers or pre-boomers whose audience was the boomers. Looks like glitter, flash and public exposure has given way to sex, drugs and rock and roll.
Last of the NFL Boomer Players
The only boomer left in the NFL was Jeff Carney of the Saints who is 45. He was released in December. There are only 6 other players over 40 who played in 2009. Jeff Feagles, New York Giants, born March 7, 1966, Matt Stover, Indianapolis Colts, born January 27, 1968, Matt Turk, Houston Texans, born June 16, 1968, Brett Favre, Minnesota Vikings, born October 10, 1969, John Kasay, Carolina Panthers, born October 27, 1969 and Junior Seau, New England Patriots, born January 19, 1969. At least one of these (Farve) is retiring this year. But we baby boomers can rejoice in that at least the half time show is “owned” by us. Long live Rock and Roll!
